Lent 2018

Lent is a time to prepare for Easter. Historically it was a time for those preparing for baptism at Easter, but now it’s a time for all baptised Christians to prepare themselves by taking time to pray, fast, and give to the poor. We encourage you to intentionally draw close to God in these 40 days (not including Sundays) before Easter. Below are a few opportunities to help you do so.

Meeting Jesus in the Gospel of John Small Group – starting Tuesday, February 20 at 7pm and meeting weekly until March 27 in the Lounge at St. Philip’s led by Rev. Stephen Kern. This Lenten prayer offering of reflection has been put together by the Anglican monastic community The Brothers of St. John the Evangelist. We have ordered 30 prayer journals at a cost of $5.00 or you can download and print your own at www.meetingjesusinjohn.org.

Morning Prayer – starting Thursday, February 22 at 10am and for the 4 Thursdays following there will be Morning Prayer for half an hour led by our Family Pastor, Brian Suggs.

Lenten Retreat Day – Saturday, March 3 from 9am-1pm.  Rev. Stephen Kirkegaard will led us through “Forgiveness-Living Love”.  Cost is $20 and you can register by emailing Katharine at office@nullspoth.ca.

Holy Week & Easter

Holy Week begins on Sunday, March 25 with Palm Sunday services at 8:15am and 10:30am. This service includes the blessing of the palms and reading the passion narrative of scripture as we enter into Holy Week.

Family Maundy Thursday service at 6pm on Thursday, March 29. This service is interactive, for all ages, and is an opportunity to learn, worship, read scripture, and pray together.  This service includes Holy Communion and ritual hand/foot washing.

Maundy Thursday service with the stripping of the altar (ancient tradition where all the altar cloths and other items are taken off the altar and it is left bare in preparation for the solemn Good Friday service) is at 7:30pm on March 29 and includes Holy Communion and ritual hand/foot washing.

Family Good Friday service starts at 9:30am on Friday, March 30 in the Parish Hall.  This interactive one-hour service provides an opportunity for parents and children to pray, worship, and learn more about Jesus’ death on the cross together.

Good Friday service starts at 10:30am on Friday, March 30.  This solemn service commemorates the cross of Jesus and includes singing, drama, scripture reading, prayer and Holy Communion.

Easter Vigil begins at 7:30pm on Saturday, March 31.  This ancient service includes lighting the new fire outside and processing into the darkened church (representing the resurrection of Jesus from the dark tomb) together.  This is the first opportunity during Holy Week to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus and includes joyful singing, scripture reading, prayer, and Holy Communion.

Easter services will be at 8:15am and 10:30am on Sunday, April 1. Both services include a joyful celebration of Christ’s resurrection and include scripture reading, prayer, and Holy Communion.  There will be a special Easter children’s program at the 10:30am service in the Parish Hall, followed by an Easter Egg hunt (open to children 12 and under).
